Dirty Linen (p.91) - "PAINTED HEAD is Hardin's most rock-oriented album....Hardin's amazingly loose vocally, tossing in growls, grunts and funky asides."

Product note

Personnel: Tim Hardin (vocals, acoustic guitar).
Additional personnel: Alan Ross (guitar, mandolin); Peter Frampton (guitars); Alun Davies (acoustic guitar); Jeff Schwartz (pedal steel guitar); Larry Packer (fiddle); Don Brooks (harmonica); Neil Shepherd (piano, harmonium); Tony Meehan (piano, organ, drums, chimes); Chris Stewart (bass guitar); Bruce Rolands (drums); Reebop Kwakubaah (congas); Tony Carr (cowbells); Rod Murfield (maracas); Dennis Lopez (tambourine, timbales); The 21st Century Singers, Bobbie Whittaker, The Cissie Houston Singers (background vocals).
Although a songwriter of great renown, Tim Hardin focused mainly on covers for this mid-career 1972 album (his final offering for CBS Records). His singing is relaxed and amiable on songs like Randy Newman's "I'll Be Home," and deeply soulful on the Willie Dixon chestnut "You Can't Judge a Book By Its Cover." Though not an appropriate starting point for Hardin newcomers, this album is essential for fans.

Recorded in England with a backing band of British session musicians, Tim Hardin's final album for Columbia Records was a peculiar side trip, but an entertaining one. Although Hardin remains best known as a sensitive songwriter, there is no original material on 1973's PAINTED HEAD. Instead, Hardin and his pickup band--including future superstar Peter Frampton, Can percussionist Reebop Kwaku Baah and Shadows drummer Tony Meehan, who also served as producer--tackle vintage blues tunes such as "Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out" and "You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover," as well as more recent songs such as Badfinger's "Perfection" and Jesse Winchester's "Yankee Lady." Hardin is in fine voice throughout, and this remastered set picks up the subtleties of the smooth, soulful production.
