On his 2007 debut for the esteemed Legacy label, ex-Phish keyboardist Page McConnell presents a charming set of songs that makes the most of his deft musicianship and amiably nasal voice. While all of his Vermont-based former bandmates--guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, and drummer Jon Fishman--appear on the album, McConnell, who penned the Santana-like fan-favorite Phish instrumental "Cars Trucks Buses," is clearly captain of this ship. In fact, McConnell tends to steer the record in a direction that is often notably poppier than much of Phish's adventurous, jam-oriented material, as best revealed on warm, Hammond-laden "Beauty of a Broken Heart." These keyboard-driven pop excursions should draw favorable comparisons to the solo work of Traffic vocalist/keyboardist Steve Winwood.
