Pioneers of the metalcore genre--a heady merger of hardcore fury and the more technically bombastic elements of heavy metal--Coalesce returned after a somewhat complicated on-again/off-again hiatus in 2009 with OX, a flat-out monster of an album. Straight from the opening salvo, "The Plot Against My Love," this release hits listeners like a barbed wire wrecking ball. Although there are delicate moments throughout ("See We Have Lost Our Will"), they seemingly exist only to lull the listener into a false sense of security. With a flawless, immediate blend of sheer weight and dizzyingly chops-oriented song structures, not to mention singer Sean Ingram's vein-busting roars, OX is an album well worth the 10-year wait.
