Review

Rolling Stone (4/1/99, pp.98-99) - 3 1/2 Stars (out of 5) - "...embraces American-folk-sired countryisms that aren't exactly in sync with the Top Forty world. But OUT OF TUNE is stunning, an unerring collection of floating little moments..."
CMJ (1/25/99, pp.24-25) - "...Mojave 3 has crafted a haunting album full of solemn guitar melodies, ghostly vocal harmonies and stark, melodic emotion..."
Magnet (4-5/99, p.74) - "...low-key but engaging, elements of traditional folk-pop and cosmic cowboy rock mingling like old chums harmonizing around the campfire..."
Entertainment Weekly (1/22-1/29/29, pp.100-101) - "...OUT OF TUNE pumps up the volume and country-rock touches, and is all the better for it....Swelling organs and forlorn steel guitars invest Halstead's bitter-sweet musings and farewells...with sonic and emotional depth; the music collapses into its own beautiful fragile heap..." - Rating: A-

Product note

Mojave 3: Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar); Simon Rowe (electric guitar); Rachel Goswell (brass, background vocals); Alan Forrester (piano, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Ian McCutcheon (drums, shaker, tambourine);
Additional personnel: Lisa Millet (vocals); B.J. Cole (pedal steel); Mick Cooke (trumpet); Roman Breslin (trombone).
Recorded at Cava Sound Workshops, Glasgow, Scotland, The Fortress, London, England, Tywardreath, Cornwall, England.
Like most of their shoegazing peers, Slowdive's Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell embraced ambient and techno music. Then they slyly shifted gears, opting for the road less traveled with the mellow and melodious folk-rock strains of Mojave 3. OUT OF TUNE builds on the lovely, understated charms of 1995's ASK ME TOMORROW. Contrary to the title, the group's fine second set showcases some of Halstead's strongest writing since the dreamy heyday of Slowdive.
OUT OF TUNE is graced with those heart-melting Halstead/Goswell harmonies--still every bit as beautiful and blessed on "Give What You Take" and "Baby's Coming Home" as they were in Slowdive--and with accents of Hammond, Wurlitzer, pedal steel, and brass. Lisa Millet's sublime gospel pipes bring the strummed acoustic chords and downy melodies of "Caught Beneath Your Heel" all that much closer to heaven. Halstead may borrow back pages from Bob Dylan ("Some Kinda Angel," "To Whom Should I Write") and Neil Young ("This Road I'm Travelling") and crib his share of leaves from Nick Drake ("Yer Feet"). But OUT OF TUNE shows Mojave 3 coming of its own, with a sparkling suite quite different from Slowdive's drowsy, gauzy enthrallments but no less seductive.
