Similar in wit and inventiveness to his legendary extended flights of fancy on the introduction to the Band's "Chest Fever," Garth Hudson's remarkable piece of conceptual instrumental music for keyboard and synthesizer combines dazzling traditional musical virtuosity and futuristic Pink Floyd--style effects in a musical ode to the city of Los Angeles. Composed and recorded in 1980 as an accompaniment to sculptor Tony Douquette's massive art installation "A Celebrational Environment," the piece also includes the voices of Hudson's wife, and his colleague Richard Manuel. Plus, as if a rarity like this wasn't enough to pique the interest of any music enthusiast, there's the added bonus of the NRA spokesman and erstwhile voice of God Charlton Heston, reading a Ray Bradbury poem.
