Title Note

Daniel Smith has always used music as artistic statement, so it should come as no surprise that the OUR GIVEST 7-inch is an even more cacophonous mashup than usual. The title track, as reworked by Odd Nosdam, mutates into a thick bottom-end, dissonantly crashing symbols, and eerily reverberating, disparately pitched vocals that invert the song's original daydream into a hypnotic nightmare. Fellow remixer Dymaxion takes it easier on listeners' psyches with "Jokin' At The Block." For its first minute, the song subsists on a backbone of Appalachian guitars, syncopated handclaps, bird chirps, and an overdubbed, repetitive vocal mantra of "I believe." Only slowly does Dymaxion layer on the percussion, eventually culminating in Beck-like feedback funk. Danielson has always left the sonic canvas wide open, so while OUR GIVEST tosses a couple of more cooks in the kitchen, the ingredients all naturally blend in.
