Review

"THE OTHER is a moving portrait of male friendship, the kind that forms on the cusp of adulthood and refuses to die....It’s also a finely observed rumination on the necessary imperfection of life--on how hypocrisy, compromise and acceptance creep into our lives and turn strident idealists into kind, loving, fully human adults."

Synopsis

When two boys--John William Barry and Neil Countryman-- meet in 1972 at age sixteen, they're brought together by what they have in common: a fierce intensity and a love of the outdoors that takes them, together and often, into Washington's remote backcountry, where they must rely on their wits--and each other--to survive. Soon after graduating from college, Neil sets out on a path that will lead him toward a life as a devoted schoolteacher and family man. But John Willliam makes a radically different choice, dropping out of college and moving deep into the woods, convinced that it is the only way to live without hypocrisy. When John enlists Neil to help him disappear completely, Neil finds himself drawn into a web of secrets and often agonizing responsibility, deceit, and tragedy--one that will finally break open with a wholly unexpected, life-altering revelation.--From publisher description.

Publisher's note

Two boys from profoundly different backgrounds--John William Barry, the wealthy scion of two elite Seattle families, and the blue-collar Irish Neil Countryman--brought together by their fierce love of the natural world, grow up to pursue vastly different paths in life, Neil as a teacher, and John William, a recluse. Reprint.

Annotation

Neil Countryman and John Williams meet at a high-school track event, and despite their class differences--Neil is a carpenter's son, John the scion of an old moneyed Seattle family--the two young men forge a deep friendship based on their love of the wilderness and their fierce idealism. As the years pass, Neil finds himself drifting into a staid middle-class life of family and quotidian responsibility. John, however, veers further toward the fringes of society, living first in a remote mobile home, then inside a limestone cave. Despite their different paths and the inevitable clashes of their changing philosophies, the two men remain friends. Narrated by Neil as he reminisces on the nature John's iconoclastic life, THE OTHER is a moving testament to the various ways our youthful dreams are weathered by the world and time. David Guterson's novel was named a New York Times Notable Book of 2008.
