Recording information: 1993.

The Roots are one of hip-hop's finest and most respected ensembles. Distinguished by their stripped down, turntable-less sound (with bass, guitar, and keyboards providing the only accompaniment) and their witty, sometimes philosophically-minded rhymes, The Roots sound like no one else. They infuse the most fundamental elements of rap with a raw, soulful integrity while still managing to spin laid-back retro grooves.

ORGANIX ranges from catchy sing-along choruses ("Pass the Popcorn") and free-form beat poetry ("Writer's Block") to grin-inducing topics ("Grits"), mystic free association ("Peace"), and flat-out fly jams ("I'm Out There"). Taken together, the mixing of real instruments with forms primarily associated with electronic media and, even more importantly, the formidable songwriting and MC talents of The Roots, make this some of the freshest and most engaging music around.
