Title Note

Like a good dance tune, 'Carmina Burana' never seems to lose its bounce. When it was written in 1936 Carl Orff's "scenic cantata" based on medieval lyrics arrived like a bolt from the blue. Orff, a music education specialist, had never written a major work before and this was miles apart from anything else around at the time, not serial, impressionist or neoclassical, but remarkably uncomplicated, writ large with catchy tunes, splashed with primary colors and rhythms. Moreover, this depiction of the ancient world was not ethereal, but earthy, a vivid tableau of human endeavor, fortune, misfortune, love and debauchery, all set in a series of short songs and choruses.

Ever an irresistible showpiece for conductors, 'Carmina' now attracts the attention of Christian Thielemann, who leads the Chorus and Orchestra of the German Opera, Berlin, in this highly responsive performance, atmospherically recorded by DG. Thielemann metes out the drama expertly with flexible tempos, slow in some of the interludes and arias yet cracklingly fast in the revels and drinking songs. Baritone Simon Keenlyside and tenor David Kuebler both shine in their high-flying parts, soprano Christiane Oelze is winningly demure and the Opera Chorus tops it all off with sharp, incisive singing.
