Dirty Linen (4-5/96, p.75) - "...entertaining, if not trailblazing..."

Title Note

Personnel: Buck Owens (vocals, guitar); Don Rich (electric & acoustic guitars, fiddle, background vocals); James Burton (electric guitar); Red Simpson, Jelly Sanders, Doyle Holly (guitar); Tom Brumley (pedal steel guitar); Bob Morris (electric bass); Don Frost (bass); Willie Cantu (drums).

Recorded at Capitol Recording Studios, Hollywood, California between August 23, 1965 and April 6, 1966. Originally released on Capitol (2640). Includes original liner notes by Mike Hoyer and reissue liner notes by Rich Kienzle.

Tracks 1-12 are stereo. Tracks 13-14 are mono.

This is part of Sundazed's Yesterdazed Series.

In 1962, while rock and roll was in the doldrums, country music was in good shape, if you can judge by Buck's records from that time. Those tales of heartbreak never sounded so fine when that strong back-beat of the Buckaroos and the warm yet edgy, expressive singing of Owens got going. Here, fiddle and piano are prominent in the sound (this wasn't always so on Buck's records), yet he gives the sharp-as-razors guitars free reign, as on "Mexican Polka." "Down on the Corner of Love" is an intricate, thoughtful tale of honky-tonk heartache. Oh yes, that pedal steel guitar's there, too.

All in all, a fine set.
