Review

Down Beat (8/92, p.38) - 3 Stars - Good - "..[the four unaccompanied guitar] solos comprise a cogent quarter-hour argument for Towner's status as a major jazz stylist. But, the gist of OPEN LETTER is that Towner still finds much of his inspiration beyond jazz's confines.."

Title Note

Personnel: Ralph Towner (synthesizer, classical & 12-string guitars); Peter Erskine (drums).

Recorded at Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway in July 1991 and February 1992.

In OPEN LETTER Ralph Towner continues to explore his personal musical universe, his composition and improvisation combining in a unified whole. With a thoroughly personal sound and approach, he continues to bridge the expanse between jazz lyricism and classical grace. Towner's playing, on both classical and 12-string guitars, is direct and seemingly effortless in drawing the listener into the music.

"Wistful Thinking," "Short and Stout," and his read of Bill Evans' composition "Waltz for Debby" transcend the conventions of the solo guitar. Synthesizers are another important element in Towner's sonic lexicon, and another area where he has developed a voice of his own. Pieces such as "The Sigh" and "Alar" are orchestrated with synth textures that both develop the compositions and highlight his improvisational skills. Drummer Pete Erskine's acoustic and electronic percussion is both subtle and intense throughout, combining color and rhythmic drive.
