Review

JazzTimes (1-2/00, pp.96-7) - "...a reflective and diverse outing...among the finer things the guitarist has yet produced, and also one of the most texturally varied....continuing to carve out a trend-free niche all his own in the guitar world. Timeless..."

Product note

Personnel: John Abercrombie (guitar); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Kenny Wheeler (trumpet, flugelhorn); Mark Feldman (violin); Dan Wall (organ); Adam Nussbaum (drums).
Recorded at Avatar Studio, New York, New York in September 1998.
Neither guitarist John Abercrombie nor producer Manfred Eicher's ECM label are often thought of in connection with dissonant, almost aggressive music, which makes the powerful OPEN LAND that much more of a surprise. Moving away from the guitar/synthesizer experiments Abercrombie favored in the early '90s towards a more traditional electric guitar tone, his playing here is at times fierce and never less than dazzling. With nine tracks in just under 65 minutes, the song structures of OPEN LAND are a bit more compact than Abercrombie usually favors; his solos are consequently more streamlined and intense. The full-band arrangements, featuring violin, tenor sax, organ, flugelhorn, trumpet, and drums are as interesting as that lineup suggests. The opening "Just Tune In" dazzles, and that high standard is maintained throughout, especially on the centerpiece "Free Piece Suit(e)."
