Title Note

Personnel" Austin Pitre (vocals, fiddle, accordion); Preston Manuel (guitar);

J. W. Pelsia (steel guitar); Alan Ardoin, Will Balfa (fiddle); James Pitre (drums).

Recorded in Austin Pitre's garage on May 13, 1971 and live at The Silver Star, Opelousas, Louisiana on May 8, 1971. Includes liner notes by Ann Allen Savoy and Chris Strachwitz.

Although this collection of two-steps and waltzes was recorded in Austin Pitre's garage and at a 1971 dance, the sound is immediate and vital. This French-language disc provides some engaging examples of traditional Cajun music at its best. Listening to OPELOUSA WALTZ, one can almost imagine hearing similar accordion passages in an open-air market somewhere in contemporary France, the place where many of these songs once came from.

Austin Pitre's voice has the nasal, gravely sound typical among Cajun singers. He and the tight-sounding band play a host of Cajun standards, including "Jolie Blonde," "Tout le Soir," "La Valse de St. Landry," and "Zydeco sont pas Sale." The title of this last song is a corruption of the French phrase "les haricots sont pas sales," ("the beans are not salty"). It is from this song that the name "zydeco" sprung to describe the music of the Creole African-Americans. This disc offers old-style Cajun music played by some of the genre's masters.
