After bursting forth in 1980 with CRAZY RHYTHMS, the Feelies laid low for the first half of the '80s. They returned in 1986 with THE GOOD EARTH, and ONLY LIFE followed two years later. ONLY LIFE is a wonderful album categorized by the group's signature rhythmic swirl and Glenn Mercer's Lou Reed-like vocals. However, where the Velvet Underground's sound and thematic core was decidedly urban, the Feelies demonstrate a rural sensibility. Indeed, what becomes most clear on this, the Feelies' third full-length work, is that the group has strong folk underpinnings. "Higher Ground" sounds like a sea shanty filtered through the New York City CBGBs bands of the '70s. While the Feelies utilize a decidedly folkish strumming technique, songs like "The Final Word" make clear that it was rock & roll that brought them all to music in the first place.
