Stick player and bassist Gunn's first solo away from mentor Fripp and the big Leagues is a spellbinding yet subtle tour de force. The sheer dramatic imagery and silky textures hint at both a potent new composer on the progressive/ethnic rock plane and a musician who has absorbed more than his fair share of THE FIRST DAY, Rain Tree Crow, and David Sylvian elements.

How surprising and delightful it is then to find that Gunn has veered off into new and unexplored territories in the progressive strata. Equally amazing is that these dense, undulating pools of experimental funk, ethno-trance, and dreamy eloquence were performed on a minimalist bed of stick, tablas/percussion, and occasional voice--although familiar spacey ambiences suggest a tangible Frippian presence. Regardless, ONE THOUSAND YEARS is a wholly unexpected and smashing debut.
