Review

Alternative Press (10/94, p.87) - "...impressive vocabulary, cutting wit, and poetic imagery, Griffin weaves tales about outcasts and sundry troubled souls that - against odds - maintain their interest for several listens..."
Vibe (8/94, p.109) - "...a delightful blend of psychedelia, jazz rock fusion, and his own Beat-like disembodied poetry recited over groove-saturated hip hop beats...the conservatory trained musician [Mark Griffin] wrote, produced, and played guitar, keyboards, and trumpet on SPIDER..."

Title Note

Personnel: Mark Griffin (vocals, guitar, keyboards, trumpet); Vernon Reid (guitar); Chris McGuire (flute, bass clarinet, soprano & tenor saxophone); Dave Palmer (piano); Drew Phelps (bass); Earl Harvin, Jr. (drums); Mike Dillon (congas, percussion); Nikhil Pandya (tablas); Rajiv Chakravarti (tamboura); Analisa Ripke (background vocals).

Despite some success with "Truth is Out of Style," MC 900 Ft. Jesus' hilarious first rap single, critics dismissed the first crossover effort from Mark Griffin's new project as a fluke. Established in the Dallas garage psychedelia revival as the head man in Lithium X-Mas, Griffin proved critics wrong with MC 900 Ft. Jesus's second album, ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE SPIDER.

With a dexterity of style second perhaps only to that of the Beastie Boys, Griffin displays his talent on 10 tracks ranging in style from word-jazz to early '70s soul. Noteworthy tracks include the trippy, sitar-soaked "New Moon," and a reverent yet novel cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Stare and Stare." At times silly, at times downright sexy, ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE SPIDER recalls the laid-back cool characterizing the best soundtracks from the golden age of blaxploitation movies, while maintaining a modern edge. Subtle textures and slow-jamming grooves make ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE SPIDER a winning combination of retro alternative irony and a respectful tribute to likes of Curtis Mayfield, while also revealing an appreciation of the Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
