ONE NIGHT STANDS is Bocephus in 1977, thus a lot less rowdy than you might expect. At the time, Nashville was in the throes of one of its cyclical flirtations with crossover appeal. Consequently, there's a lot of stuff here that, as they say, doth protest the smell of cow manure too much.

The arrangements are laden with shimmering electric pianos and female choruses, and some of the songs seem to have no connection with country music as anyone knows it. "All By Myself," for instance, was written by the well-known good ole' boy team of Eric Carmen and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Williams, however, is in terrific voice throughout. And when the material is good--his strikingly poetic "She's Still the Star (On the Stage of My Mind)," a honky-tonker like "Mobile Boogie"--he's as entertaining as ever.
