By the time of this album's release, Charles Brown had been recording for 45 years. ONE MORE FOR THE ROAD finds Brown in fine voice, as he plays a set that mixes a few of his originals with some perfectly selected covers. His singing has a casual ease that made him famous in the '40s and continues to make a chestnut like "I Miss You So" resonate with gorgeous beauty. He also succeeds in taking one of someone else's signature pieces (Charlie Rich's "Who Will the Next Fool Be?") and making it entirely his own. Brown adds bass, drums, guitar and tenor saxophone to his own piano playing. The album is cleanly recorded and the instruments' supple interplay is warmly delineated throughout.
