Review

Uncut (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A] moody and restrained affair which links him to a peculiarly Australian form of alt.country perhaps best described as 'urban & western'."
The Wire (p.58) - "Harvey has a fine interpretative skill....The best example is 'Man Without A Home', which briefly segues into the tune and lyric structure of Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' to deliver the man's side of the song."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.89) - 3 stars out of 5 - "'Demon Alchohol', written by Bambi Lee Savage, is a great find and Harvey's arrangement imbues it with all the dark seduction of addiction."

Title Note

Personnel: Mick Harvey (vocals); Robin Casinader, Suzanne Simpson, Andrea Keeble (violin); Jason Bunn (viola); Helen Mountfort (cello).

Recording information: Grace Lane, Melbourne, Australia.

Best known for his work as Nick Cave's right-hand man in the Birthday Party and the Bad Seeds, multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey has also enjoyed a career as a solo artist. In addition to some fine film scores, Harvey has released several albums of original songs, and 2005's ONE MAN'S TREASURE might very well be the best. The music is atmospheric, yet rooted in country and folk forms, and the songs are given a narrative bent that's equally captivating -- especially on the devilish "Demon Alcohol" and the pastoral rocker "Mother Earth." Harvey plays nearly all the instruments himself, and his long history arranging for the Bad Seeds is evident here on this beautiful, ambitious album.
