Album Description

A two-disc collection of lovers rock and classic soul covers, One Love illustrates just how important American R&B was to the development of Jamaican roots reggae. Motown, in particular, gets heavy attention here, and three songs originally done by the Temptations are among the highlights of the set. Delroy Wilson's version of "Get Ready" slows the tempo a bit, but still carries the soulful force of the original, while Eric Donaldson's take on "The Way You Do the Things You Do" boasts a rich, full sound. The Techniques bring an added layer of wistful sadness to "I Wish It Would Rain" by giving the song a surface feel of sunny brightness. There are some genuine Jamaican classics here as well, including "The Tide Is High" by the Paragons, later a huge international hit for Blondie, and the doo wop-influenced "Daddy" by Toots & the Maytals. John Holt's urgent reading of "Rainy Night in Georgia" doesn't make you forget Ray Charles, but it certainly holds its own. This is a wonderful collection that reminds listeners that roots reggae wasn't necessarily all fire and brimstone. ~ Steve Leggett
