Review

Down Beat (1/97, p.57) - 4.5 Stars - (out of 5) - "On ONE FOOT IN THE BLUES, it's clear that the classy Tan Canary from New Orleans does his thing with the understanding of someone who actually knows what lyrics on love and life are about..."
JazzTimes (2/97, p.143) - "One of the great vocalists in all of blues or jazz....brilliant release....One of the best of the year."

Title Note

Personnel includes: Johnny Adams (vocals); Jimmy Ponder (guitar); Donald Harrison, Jr. (alto saxophone); Ed Petersen (tenor saxophone); Jamil Sharif (trumpet); Dr. Lonnie Smith (Hammond B-3 organ); Shannon Powell (drums, cowbell).

Recorded at Ultrasonic Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana in June 1996. Includes liner notes by Scott Billington.

New Orleans soul/blues/jazz legend Adams tries something new here, fronting a Hammond B-3 organ combo with spectacular results. Working with Dr. Lonnie Smith, an original member of George Benson's classic mid-'60s quartet who also made some fondly remembered albums for Blue Note, Adams tackles a bunch of low-down blues and ballads and the results simply drip with atmosphere; close your eyes and it's 3 am at some smoky dive where you can practically smell the scotch and cigarettes. High points include the double-entendre-laden "Ill Wind" ("It's blowing me no good" indeed), and Percy Mayfield's "Half Awoke" (a witty rant about a woman who's a little too square for her own good), although Adams phrasing and Smith's mastery of effects (with feet like his on the pedals, who needs a bass player?) are memorable throughout.
