Uncut (p.67) - "The melodies on this debut are breathless, more Rufus than Tori, imbued with piano swells." -- Grade: B
The debut album from Alison Sudol (who records under the name A Fine Frenzy) announces the arrival of an accessible, pop-oriented singer-songwriter. While Sudol's recording name, song titles, and image may suggest an experimental or alternative slant, her music would not sound out of place on adult-contemporary radio. Her piano-and-guitar-driven songs are bathed in lush production, while her voice, a breathy soprano, unwinds pleasant melodies. ONE CELL IN THE SEA isn't revolutionary, but it is a promising debut, one that should appeal to fans of artists like Tori Amos and Michelle Branch.
