Title Note

One of the most important performers of the 20th century, Paul Robeson was--in addition to being a stirring vocalist, an acclaimed stage actor, and one of the first African-American film stars--an outspoken advocate for civil rights and the labor struggle. Smithsonian Folkways' ON MY JOURNEY collects 32 tracks that Robeson recorded and released independently in the aftermath of his blacklisting from the entertainment establishment by Red Scare McCarthyites. The collection includes Negro spirituals, protest songs and work songs ("Hammer Song" features a historic collaboration between Robeson and blues duo Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee), classical pieces, and folk songs from across the globe, all of which are sung in Robeson's deeply moving bass. On so many levels, his truly was a voice of a protest and freedom.
