Pianist Rachel Z and her all-female trio admirably take on the music of one of the greatest modern jazz composers, Wayne Shorter, with ON THE MILKY WAY EXPRESS. Shorter's music is challenging and inviting, with plenty of intriguing twists and turns to thrill both the musicians and audience alike. The trio captures the spirit of this music, covering several of Shorter's most cherished works and adding their own spirit to make the performance come alive.

Z has a unique facility at the piano, capable of communicating both the esoteric and the plainly musical in a single phrase. Her counterparts are equally adept and follow Z's lead through Shorter's often-treacherous progressions with style and grace. Of particular interest on this disc are the tracks most associated with Shorter's tenure in Miles Davis' group. Hearing pieces like "Fall," "Dolores," and "Iris" in such an intimate setting brings new light to their familiar strains. Above all, the deep spirituality of Shorter's music is done considerable justice here and followers of the saxophonist will find this a fitting tribute.
