Nina Nastasia's gorgeous 2006 release, ON LEAVING, conjures thoughts of icy roadsides, frosted windowpanes, and cold leather car seats, as well as the fleeting warmth of love and companionship that can thaw them all. The 12 tracks here are built on gentle guitar figures and on Nastasia's lovely voice, which is more than capable of evoking the broad range of emotions that these songs contain. Occasionally augmented by simple piano figures, drums, and atmospheric touches, Nastasia's simple aesthetic is rendered perfectly crisp, thanks to the always consistent studio work of producer/engineer Steve Albini.
