Whereas the 1987 Blue Oyster Cult greatest-hits anthology, CAREER OF EVIL: THE METAL YEARS, emphasized the band's '70s metal prime with few selections from the '80s (it didn't include the Top-40 hit single "Burnin' For You"), the 1990 budget-priced ON FLAME WITH ROCK AND ROLL contained the band's best from all eras. At only 10 tracks in length, the album is really of use to newcomers who are interested in sampling BOC's radio standards. Most of the band's less-renowned early tracks were often just as good, but make no mistake about it, there was a reason why most of the selections on ON FLAME WITH ROCK AND ROLL have become classic rock radio standards.

In addition to the aforementioned "Burnin' For You," other gems such as "Godzilla" and "Don't Fear the Reaper" have become all-time metal anthems, made to be cranked loud. Also featured is a spirited cover of the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams," as well as such standout album cuts as "Transmaniacon MC," "Career of Evil," "Dominance and Submission," and "Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll." If you're just seeking Blue Oyster Cult's biggest hits, ON FLAME WITH ROCK AND ROLL is highly recommended.
