During his final decade, drummer Gene Estes frequently played vibes in a quartet with guitarist Barry Zweig, bassist Paul Gormley and drummer Alan Estes that was based on the sound of the early-'50s Red Norvo Trio. Fortunately, the band was recorded, and for this set they performed mostly underplayed standards, along with four Estes originals. Highlights include three occasions when Gene Estes and Barry Zweig improvise together for a chorus or two unaccompanied by the rhythm section, as well as Gormley's fine bass feature on "Tricotism," and a touching version of Jimmy Rowles' "The Peacocks." Zweig's soft-toned guitar recalls both Jimmy Raney and Tal Farlow; Estes sounds close to Norvo without directly copying him. Overall, this is an enjoyable set. ~ Scott Yanow
