The Move Artist Snapshot:

One of the quintessential British psych-pop bands of the 1960s, the Move was fronted by pop visionary Roy Wood, and racked up numerous UK chart hits. Unlike many of their contemporaries, they were stylistically adventurous, and occasionally dipped into both heavy rock and amped-up rockabilly, and even turned a song by folkie Tom Paxton into a hard-rock behemoth. After the Move's breakup, Wood, drummer Bev Bevan, and late arrival Jeff Lynne started the Electric Light Orchestra. While Lynne steered that band to pop stardom, Wood formed the rock-oriented Wizzard.

Review

Mojo (Publisher) (10/99, p.127) - "The Move's catalogue is notoriously hit and miss, and this is as good a way as any to get what you need....Later 45s like the faux-epic 'Blackberry Way' and the super-heavy 'Brontosaurus' are witness to the disintegration of the strange stylistic balancing act that made The Move briefly great..."

Title Note

Although the Move never matched the stature of contemporaries like the Beatles, Kinks, or Stones--especially in the U.S., where most of its records were never even released--the band's '60s output stands among the best of its era. Most remarkably, in the late '60s, when the album was the defining standard of the time, the Move was a singles band. The band's two '60s albums are disjointed patchworks of previously released singles and odd experiments; it was on seven inches of vinyl that Roy Wood and company shone. From the "1812 Overture," to gentle psychedelic masterpieces like "I Can Hear the Grass Grow" and "Flowers in the Rain," to stomping rockers like "Blackberry Way," the Move made all of its most concise and unforgettable statements on singles. The excellently annotated OMNIBUS, collecting all of these gems, is the best possible introduction to this long-overlooked band.
