Annotation

Upton Sinclair's 1927 novel exposes the corruption of the Southern California oil boom with the same muck-racking gusto as his classic THE JUNGLE did for the Chicago meat-packing industry. Sinclair wears his socialist sympathies on his sleeve, but the story of a man and his son rising up in the cutthroat world of the oil industry surpasses mere politics. Though filled with the slang and energy of the Jazz Age, OIL! is remarkable for its contemporary qualities and critiques. It seems particularly prescient concerning the ability of capitalism to bring out worst in men, and should be read, enjoyed, and studied into the 21st century. The novel was the inspiration for Paul Thomas Anderson's acclaimed 2007 film THERE WILL BE BLOOD starring Daniel Day Lewis.
