Title Note

Vas: Azam Ali (vocals, hammered dulcimer, psaltery, tamboura, frame drum); Greg Ellis (vocals, udu, tabla, dumbek, nagara, riqq, frame drum, bells, gongs, tombak, shakers).

Additional personnel includes: Omar Faruk Tekbilek (vocals, ney, zurna); Steve Stevens (nylon string guitar); Hans Christian (cello, sarangi, nyckelharpa); Nabil Azzam (violin).

All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.

Combining elements from traditional Middle Eastern, Asian, and African music, Vas's 1998 release OFFERINGS continues along the same path as their debut album SUNYATA. This release, however, is more song-oriented and features the talents of four guest musicians. Because of the additional personnel, the music on OFFERINGS is more expansive, allowing co-leaders Azam Ali (voice) and Greg Ellis (percussion) a chance to broaden their collective musical vision. This vision is spiritually based, and consequently, the music found here is very meditative.

On OFFERINGS, the soaring melodies of Ali are often answered by Nabil Azzam, who plays an Arabic violin. This is epitomized by "Ellora," one of the more mystical songs on this release. Other selections such as "Mist Weaving" and "Svarga" are more energetic and uplifting and "The Promise" actually has a Western, pop sensibility. Despite Vas's penchant toward pop, this album is ultimately based on Eastern philosophy and Eastern musical styles. Because of this, OFFERINGS is predictably quite contemplative and ponderous.
