Bobbie Gentry Artist Snapshot:

Country/pop signer Bobbie Gentry is an anomaly in both genres. She broke into the scene in 1967 with the self-penned story-song "Ode to Billy Joe," about the events surrounding the suicide of a teenage boy in Choctaw, Mississippi. The song combined dirgy blues, pop hooks, and soulful vocals, and marked the arrival of a distinct new voice in music. Gentry would never again achieve the success of "Ode to Billy Joe," but she did score a few hits via her beloved collaborations with Glenn Campbell, and notch a few enduring standards, such as "Fancy." Gentry has maintained a cult following over the decades thanks to her mercurial amalgam of blues, country, soul, and Bacharach-style pop, and her hermit-like retirement in 1978.

Title Note

This two-for-one CD from the Australian reissue label Raven Records gathers Bobbie Gentry's first and fifth albums for Capitol Records, 1967's ODE TO BILLIE JOE and 1969's TOUCH 'EM WITH LOVE. Though terminally overshadowed by its iconic title track, ODE TO BILLIE JOE remains a startling debut throughout. Almost entirely self-penned (with the exception of a fine take on the folk standard "Niki Hoeky"), the folk-influenced hard country of these 10 songs features a novelistic lyrical sense that owes much to Gentry's fellow Mississippian, Eudora Welty. TOUCH 'EM WITH LOVE branches away from Gentry's original sparse country sound into lavishly arranged pop with soul and R&B influences, including impressive covers of "You've Made Me So Very Happy," "Son of a Preacher Man," and a gender-reversed take on Jimmy Webb's "Where's the Playground, Susie?"
