Review

Alternative Press (10/00, p.109) - 3 out of 5 - "...An official bootleg...focusing on their more textural side....will appeal to hardcore fans..."

Title Note

Spring Heel Jack: John Coxon, Ashley Wales (various instruments).

Additional personnel includes: William Burroughs (spoken vocals); Ed Coxon (violin).

ODDITIES is a perfect name for this Spring Heel Jack disc. Not only are these rare and hard-to-find recordings; they're also some of the more extreme excursions members Coxon and Wales have recorded. There's nothing here that could be considered jungle or drum-and-bass; instead, SHJ's penchant for dense, dissonant textures and 20th century classical music, previously only hinted at, is brought completely to the fore.

Soundscapes such as "Piece for Six Turntables," "2nd Piece for La Monte Young," and "Trouble" (for DJ Trouble of experimental New Jersey radio station WFMU), are sure to be a challenge for some; others won't be able to get enough of them. Take special note of SHJ's reworking of William Burroughs' "The Road to the Western Lands," which new soundtrack makes Burroughs' monologue sound all the more ominous.
