Title Note

Spongetones: Jamie Hoover (vocals, guitar, bass, drums, percussion); Steve Stoeckel (vocals, guitar, bass); Patrick Walters (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Rob Thorne (drums, percussion).

Additional personnel: Greg James (drums).

Recorded at The Washateria Studios, Clover, South Carolina.

More than almost any power pop band worthy of the name, North Carolina's Spongetones aren't afraid to try new things. After two early '80s releases of note-perfect Merseybeat, collected on the essential CD BEAT AND TORN, the group has explored new musical directions on each of their infrequent releases.

2000's spectacular ODD FELLOWS, probably their best album, is swirling psychedelia heavily influenced by REVOLVER, Curt Boettecher, and even a little Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd. The album's tension is derived from the contrast between Jamie Hoover's pure pop gems such as the opening "You'll Come Running Back" and "Home," and Steve Stoeckels' weirder, yet still wildly catchy, experiments such as "March of the Creaming Beezers" and "Love Song to Mrs. Parker." A lovely version of Paul McCartney's Everlys homage "On the Wings of a Nightingale" is a respectful nod to another band whose leaders' differing styles produced exciting, compelling albums.
