CMJ (12/00, p.62) - "...Thugged-out rhymes and George Clinton samples for all....a gangsta tea party..."

Title Note

A real West Coast all-star compilation, GANGSTA PARTY is as close as anyone's likely to get to a definitive survey of turn of the century west-side hip-hop. From Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre to Warren G and Ice Cube, this disc covers all the bases. While the collection abounds with slices of gangsta life (how could it not?), it's far from a monochromatic landscape of drive-bys and shoot-outs.

For one thing, there's a treasure trove of undeniable hooks here, such as the slithery synth lines on Kurupt's "Everybody Knows," the vocoder vocals on Roscoe's "I Love Cali," and the endearingly quirky chanting on W.C.'s "Just Clownin'." There's also some variety to the themes and moods portrayed on the disc; for example, the aforementioned "I Love Cali," and Ant Banks' "Players Holiday," which incorporates Bill Withers' sunny "Lovely Day" in the service of a celebration of old-fashioned peace, love, and happiness. Ultimately, this compilation takes both "gangsta" and "party" literally, making for a nicely balanced look at left-coast rap.
