Dirty Linen (Apr/May 93, p.85) - "...a great source recording for wonderful songs for kids. Guthrie's musical delivery of these 16 tunes is probably too dated for kids today, but as an historical record of this great musician performing his own compositions, it can't be beat....A charming record of a more innocent time..."
Includes liner notes by Woodie Guthrie.
NURSERY DAYS may be of more interest to parents than some children--Woody Guthrie's distinctive voice has never been for all tastes--but it's a fine collection of classic children's songs. Divided between silly singalong tunes like "Jiggy Jiggy Bum" and "My Yellow Crayon" and more instructive songs like "Clean-O" and the subtly moralized "Don't You Push Me Down," NURSERY DAYS is a delightful and engaging record. Guthrie wrote most of these songs for his own children, and the overriding sense one gets from listening to these 16 tracks is one not of a singer addressing his audience, but a father playing with his kids. Whether the sweetly goofy "Bubble Gum" or the spirited "Race You Down the Mountain," Guthrie's songs amuse and entertain kids and adults alike.
