In a period when the world of classical music turned to song stylings, there was a definite distinction between German lieder and the French compositions of the time. The French were more enamored with lyrical expression, making lieder seem, by comparison, restrained.

Soprano V‚ronique Gens captures the magic at the heart of these songs. Accompanied by pianist Roger Vignoles, these songs are at once intimate and larger than life. Particularly in the performance of works by Faur‚, both soprano and piano find a playful spirit in the material. The lighthearted and joyful 'Mandoline' is an excellent example of delight in French song. Depth of emotion is found in its full range in the works of Debussy and Poulenc, giving listeners a deeply moving album: sweetness and melancholy are intertwined throughout in the masterful tandem performance of Gens and Vignoles.
