Matthew Shipp Artist Snapshot:

Matthew Shipp was one of the most vital and inventive jazz pianists to emerge in the 1990s. Delaware-born Shipp came to New York after graduating from Berklee, and played with David S. Ware and Roscoe Mitchell, among others, before becoming known as a solo artist. Influenced as much by Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk as by Cecil Taylor or Ornette Coleman, he brought a rich harmonic vocabulary to his avant-garde explorations. After the turn of the century, he began incorporating electronics into his work, pushing the boundaries of jazz ever further.

Review

Alternative Press (2/02, p.80) - 8 out of 10 - "...A great album..."
The Wire (1/02, pp.64,66) - "...Shipp's confrontation of the emotive beats of HipHop with improvised interplay is well served by his musicians and the glowing, bass solid, 'in your face' production."
Down Beat (4/02, p.58) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...NU BOP works best as dance music, when Shipp's repetitive chord cycles take a back seat to the beats."

Title Note

Personnel: Matthew Shipp (piano); Daniel Carter (saxophone, flute); Chris Flam (synthesizer, programming); William Parker (bass); Guillermo E. Brown (drums).

Recorded at Sorcerer Sound Studios, New York, New York.

This is part of Thirsty Ear Records "Blue" series.

Jazz and electronica mated many times before NU BOP, on both the electronic side (Squarepusher, Tied & Tickled Trio) and the jazz side (Erik Truffaz, Graham Haynes), but seldom so purposefully and definitively as on this recording by boundary-pushing pianist Matthew Shipp. While Shipp is joined here by three esteemed downtown jazzers, the addition of the colorfully named Flam on electronics takes NU BOP that extra step from acoustic, '60s-inspired avant garde jazz to a fresher brew of jazz improv flavored by synth textures and laced with programmed beats.

William Parker's churning bass lines veer between frenetic, Alan Silva-inspired free jazz to syncopated patterns that flirt with electronica-derived drum-and-bass rhythms, and whichever way he leans he's met at each end by the sympathetic percussive responses of Guillermo E. Brown. Shipp's knotty piano work intertwines with the gritty exhalations of saxophonist Daniel Carter atop the whole thing, riding the hybrid sound to glory like a visionary drunk trying to keep a runaway locomotive from flying off the track. Of course, those moments when the band does fly off the track prove to be among the most interesting.
