Matthew Shipp was one of the most vital and inventive jazz pianists to emerge in the 1990s. Delaware-born Shipp came to New York after graduating from Berklee, and played with David S. Ware and Roscoe Mitchell, among others, before becoming known as a solo artist. Influenced as much by Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk as by Cecil Taylor or Ornette Coleman, he brought a rich harmonic vocabulary to his avant-garde explorations. After the turn of the century, he began incorporating electronics into his work, pushing the boundaries of jazz ever further.
