Review

Spin (p.84) - "[T]hey're back to mindless fun, and with new drummer Westin Glass, they've resurrected the savage, speed-strummed fervor that once made Kill Rock Stars matter."
Alternative Press (p.110) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "'I Called Out Your Name' could be an early Beatles single if it weren't for the distortion....It's a perfect little pop song."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.54) - "[T]heirs is a sound that manages to combine clever college rock with the kind of songwriting skills that cannot be learned from the pages of a book."
Paste (magazine) (p.59) - "NOW WE CAN SEE feels both like a nod to America's past grievances and its potentially bright future. The Thermals have never shied from topics like war, politics and religion..."
Pitchfork (Website) - "[T]he Thermals' Hutch Harris has always been able to ponder life's big questions without being ponderous....He takes advantage of a newfound musical maturing, buffing his fuzzy riffs into polished power-pop..."

Title Note

Personnel: Hutch Harris (vocals, guitar); Kathy Foster (vocals, piano, bass instrument, drums).

This Portland, Oregon, power-punk trio's fourth LP continues their Superchunk-like trajectory. The band has moved away from super-sweet hissy fits, and while fans of their early super-charged anthems might be dismayed, chances are they (like the band) could use a break from all the adrenaline. Along with being less sonically strident, NOW WE CAN SEE also tones down the righteous politics of their previous release, THE BODY, THE BLOOD, THE MACHINE. And like that record, the title track is NOW's anchor, summing up their slightly altered musical direction with lazy doo-wop harmonizing and repetitively minor chords. There are still garage rippers, like the outstanding innocence-regained rager "When We Were Alive," but NOW WE CAN SEE hints at a vision of long-term future rather than power-chord burnout.
