Headed up by French musicians Olivier Libaux and Marc Collin, Nouvelle Vague is a collective that specializes in bossa nova arrangements of New Wave songs. The band's name is a reference to French New Wave cinema, which further evokes the group's connection to French culture and, especially, the chanson tradition. Nouvelle Vague's self-titled debut featured a number of guest female vocalists to perform breezy, stripped-down bossa nova renditions of gems by Joy Division, the Clash, and XTC, among others. BANDE A PART, released in 2006, followed a similar formula. The project changed directions with NEW WAVE ('07), which updated classic pop tunes with New Wave flair, and again with COMING HOME ('07), which reinterpreted well-known film themes.
