Review

Entertainment Weekly (8/15/97, p.75) - "...Other than the spirited title tune and a bluegrass ballad with Alison Krauss, this is the dullest set of songs since, well, his last album." - Rating: C+

"Something That We Do" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. "Still Holding On" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals.

"Nothin' But The Taillights" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.

On his eighth album, Clint Black, the thinking man's country celeb, is at his most dynamic. He moves energetically through a repertoire ranging from uptempo country rockers such as the title track to sweet, romantic ballads like "That Something in My Life," with endless surprises in between, including the bluesy "Bitter Side of Sweet." Some of the best material here is collaborative; "Our Kind of Love," with the assistance of Alison Krauss and Union Station, effectively examines the bluegrass roots of country music, and Black and Krauss's harmonies are particularly wonderful. One of the most spectacular songs on NOTHIN' BUT THE TAILLIGHTS is the totally acoustic, low-key "Ode to Chet," which features some of country music's best guitar players, including Chet Atkins himself.
