Emerging from the jazz scene of Tel Aviv and educated in the United States, Anat Cohen is truly an international jazz musician. Specializing in clarinet and in soprano & tenor saxophones, Cohen has played in the big band Diva and the New York-based Choro Ensemble (dedicated to the choro style of Brazil) as well as leading and co-leading various bands. Nothing if not multi-facted, Cohen has been inspired by South American and Middle Eastern music along with jazz's bebop, post-bop, and free eras. NOTES is in a way a summation of Cohen's career thus far. While the format is that of a relatively straight-ahead post-bop jazz quartet, Cohen's hearty, sinuous playing and original tunes reflect a variety of influences and shades, from bluesy gospel to moody Eastern modality.
