Publisher's note

An enlighting look at how peaceful communication can create compassionate connections with family, friends, and other acquaintances, this book uses stories, examples, and sample dialogues to provide solutions to communication problems both at home and in the workplace. Guidance is provided on identifying and articulating feelings and needs, expressing anger fully, and exploring the power of empathy in order to speak honestly without creating hostility, break patterns of thinking that lead to anger and depression, and communicate compassionately. These nonviolent communication skills are fully explained and can be applied to personal, professional, and political differences. Included in the new edition is information on how to compassionately connect with oneself.

Annotation

Marshall Rosenberg, founder of the Center for Non Violent Communication, discloses many important tips and guidelines for interpersonal relations in this important book. Among his ideas are how we can learn to choose our words more carefully when conveying our needs so as not to be misunderstood by others. (Instead of saying, "You're such a slob," for example, it might be better to say, "When you don't hang up your coat I feel angry.") It is also important to listen carefully to what others who may not be phrasing themselves so carefully are saying, and to then decipher what they really mean. Rosenberg provides lots of sample conversational dialogue, and there is also a chapter on nonviolent self-communication that can help people lighten up on themselves. Rosenberg's writing style is free of academic pomposity, making it easy, enlightening reading for anyone who may be feeling misunderstood or who seeks to better understand others.
