Review

JazzTimes (p.90) - "[A]s a statement of avant-garde improv it stacks up well against anything released in 2008. Mitchell's duet with Anthony Braxton, playing sopranino saxophone, on 'Off Five Dark Six,' still raises hairs."
Signal To Noise (magazine) (pp.64-65) - "NONAAH remains provocative, even daunting, music. It's the rare session that still sounds 'outside' decades after it was made."

Title Note

Alto saxophonist (and multi-instrumentalist) Roscoe Mitchell is a founding member of the seminal avant-garde jazz band Art Ensemble of Chicago, but he's maintained a parallel solo career. Originally issued in 1977, NONAAH is one of his finest and most uncompromising albums. While most tracks feature Mitchell's solo sax unaccompanied, there are also a few trio pieces as well as a saxophone quartet. This album features fierce timbres and dynamic, near minimalist-type repetition, most of it played with a harrowing intensity. Somewhere in the stratosphere, between John Coltrane and John Cage, thrives NONAAH. (The reissue features bonus tracks.)
