Review

Rolling Stone (8/22/96) - 3 Stars - Good - "...The duo's ferocious word flow is strapped to a minimalist yet mesmerizing sound--dusty, down-tempo beats awash in dark, intoxicating tonality....NOCTURNAL definitely plays for the late-night prowl..."
Spin (8/96, pp.101-102) - Worthy - "...Heltah Skeltah derive their edge from the dynamic vocal presence delivered by Rock's low-pitched growls and Ruck's irrationally tinged mutterings; dark, gritty production....NOCTURNAL is a stimulating record..."
Vibe (8/96, p.144) - "...Heltah Skeltah draw a lyrical bloodbath with their debut album....Employing potent mind-control methodology, Rock and Ruck easily convert the nonbelievers."
The Source (7/96, p.88) - 3.5 Mics - Dope - "...these two rip the mic like a two-headed monster, with Ruc's deep-voiced flow perfectly situated as the backbone to Roc's hard-as-nails delivery....The production is...designed to highlight rather than overshadow the MCs..."
Option (11-12/96, p.109) - "...Backed by the most basic of beats, Heltah Skeltah's NOCTURNAL is thickly drum-centric, its rhymes flow like butter, with a perfunctory street mentality so central to the genre..."
Melody Maker (8/3/96, p.49) - "...60 pure mindblowing minutes of Brooklyn perfection; as good as anything the East Coast has given us this year....absolutely MANDATORY..."

Principally recorded at Dolla Cab Lab, Brooklyn, New York; Chung King Studios, Unique Studios and D&D Studios, New York, New York.

Heltah Skeltah is the third act to emerge from under the wings of Brooklyn's Boot Camp Clique, following Black Moon and Smif-N-Wessun. The two rappers in Heltah Skeltah sport a similar underground style to their mentors in Black Moon, with basic production and off-the-top-of-the-head rhymes. The production here is darker, but maintains a funky appeal.

NOCTURNAL is a true lyrical album. It focuses primarily on the the duo's nearly-unmatchable microphone skills. Rock and Ruck spit rhymes back and forth, almost non-stop, as if they could go on for days. Their combination of hip-hop realism and head-nodding beats makes this a solid debut.
