Known as "The Cajun Hank Williams," D.L. Menard bridges the gap between Cajun and country music. (His songs are often played on country music stations.) This disc of French-language songs (though the titles are in English) exemplifies his particular mix of genres. Menard's voice itself is quite unique--it has a tight, nasal, and twangy timbre. Ken Smith's smooth and supple fiddle playing, as heard in "I passed in front of your door," makes a nice counterpoint to Menard's rough sound. Blackie Forestier and Eddie Lejeune contribute some spirited accordion work.
"Let's Gallop to Mamou" and "The Convict Waltz" demonstrate the finesse with which this band plays the old, classic Cajun tunes. There are other, more Western sounding items, such as "Big Texas," but as this is sung in French, the country sound's borders are extended somewhat. As always, Rounder Records provides elucidating liner notes for the listener. NO MATTER WHERE YOU AT makes for a highly enjoyable addition to a Cajun music collection.
