Review

"[R]ecaptures the bizarro political manipulator and his era with...prickly animation and smarts..."

"NIXONLAND reads marvelously. Perlstein has the rare gift of being able to weave social, political, and cultural history into a single seamless narrative, linking backroom political negotiations to suburban protests over sex education in schools to the premiere of BONNIE AND CLYDE. "

"A solid work of political history, if necessarily long and grim in the telling."

Publisher's note

An account of the thirty-seventh presidency sets Nixon's administration against a backdrop of the tumultuous civil rights movement while offering insight into how key events in the 1960s set the stage for today's political divides, in a chronicle that documents such events as the Watts riots and Nixon's landslide reelection. 60,000 first printing.

Annotation

In this historical analysis, Rick Perlstein gives Richard M. Nixon credit for being politically savvy and for astutely grabbing the reins of power in the late 60s and early '70s by demonizing his opposition. After having been virtually counted out of the game following an ignominious defeat in California, Nixon somehow pushed the hot button issue of law and order in an America torn by domestic unrest and by an impasse in Vietnam. He was elected and later reelected not despite of, but because of a dark psyche that saw enemies everywhere; and, says Perlstein, Nixon was able to frame the debates along his own strongly partisan and divisive lines.
