Unsurprisingly for an outfit that's appropriated the name of a legendary actress, the sound of Washington, D.C.'s Gena Rowlands Band tends toward the cinematic. A collaboration with New York's Anti-Social Music collective, their second full length album contains songs from leader and singer Bob Massey's post-punk opera, which was inspired by his grandparents' home movies. A dazzling blend of jazz, punk, and neo-classical music, the set features lovely, meandering vocal lines, combining innocence with an ominous sense of unease.
