First line

"Maybe my obsessive desire to find extremes has to do with growing up where nothing ever happened," Trent Reznor would later say, and the details of his early life would seem to bear this out.

Publisher's note

The world's most disturbing rock band is in effect one man - singer and songwriter Trent Reznor. Since stealing the show during the original Lollapalooza tour in 1991, NIN has limned the hard edge of the techno revolution. In Reznor's desperate, combative persona and disarrayed melodies the musical community has finally found a band that appalls, confounds, and undeniably attracts. Horrified yet entranced, NIN's fans are like moths drawn toward the disfiguring flame of their music. From a well of previously unpublished research, Huxley has carved out the history of this improbable hero: Reznor's rise as an Appalachian outcast to dyspeptic sex symbol; his connections to Courtney Love; and his relationship with his spasmodically fixated fans.

From a well of previously unpublished research and uncommon access to Trent Reznor's intimates, Martin Huxley has scribbled a history of this improbable hero: his rise as an Appalachian outcast to dyspeptic sex symbol; his sensational liaison with Courtney Love; and his relationship to his spasmodically fixated fans. Ricocheting off the worlds of goth rock and grunge, Nine Inch Nails has emerged: melancholic, lyrically acute but publicity wary, self-loathing but explosively popular. Martin Huxley digs hard and unearths the truth beneath this, the ultimate noise.

Annotation

Taking as a childhood role model the Six Million Dollar Man Steve Austin, Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor seems to have had a future in some kind of robotics mapped out for him from an early age. His adoption of machine-based electronic music as his favored means of expression came around the same time as the advent of synth bands like the Human League and the rise of new wave in the early 1980s, and, though an indifferent guitarist, he threw himself into mastering the technology behind the music. Grabbing quotes from a variety of sources, Martin Huxley's biography of Reznor and his band, NINE INCH NAILS: SELF DESTRUCT, zips through such milestones as Reznor's debut album, 1989's PRETTY HATE MACHINE, whose stark industrial textures were met a cool reception from his record label, TVT. In a narrative that touches on many significant events in the Reznor story, Huxley constructs a picture of a compulsively work-obsessed individual with a finely honed sense of his music's shock value. The author relates the tale of Reznor's feud with Kurt Cobain widow and Hole front person Courtney Love, indirectly providing revealing sketches of both stars' personalities, as well as portraying Reznor's acute musical vision and hinting at his many personal insecurities.
