Willie Nelson has proven himself at home with different styles and genres of songs, be it recording country music and Tin Pan Alley/Great American Songbook classics, or performing with rock & rollers (Neil Young, Alejandro Escovedo). NIGHT & DAY is Nelson's first all-instrumental album, and Nelson fans and open-minded country AND jazz fans will find it a delight. Nelson and his regular band--including Jody Payne, Bobbie Nelson, Mickey Raphael, and frequent guest Johnny Gimble--perform western-tinged versions of jazz standards. Many songs have come to be associated with the French Gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt: "Honeysuckle Rose," "All the Things You Are," and Django's own "Nuages." The band sounds like it's finally getting to "stretch out" in the studio. The musicianship is superb and assured--the band members don't try too hard to dazzle the listener. NIGHT & DAY captures the sound of a mostly-acoustic jazz group camped-out around a crackling western fire--a real lazy-day treat for those who can appreciate both Chet Atkins AND Herb Ellis.
