Mesh Match For "At Newport" CD by Dizzy Gillespie:

Dizzy Gillespie Artist Snapshot:

If Charlie Parker was the chief architect of the bop revolution of the 1940s, Dizzy Gillespie was its standard-bearer, an evangelist who battled public hostility and incomprehension with rapier wit. A trumpeter of dazzling virtuosity, he matched Parker's rhythmic innovations with deft harmonic ingenuity. He also functioned as teacher, putting his vast knowledge of harmony at the disposal of younger musicians like Miles Davis, who were trying to get a handle on the new sound. His historic big band featuring Chano Pozo was the first large-scale attempt to combine Latin music with jazz, and the unflagging excellence of his subsequent career was a tribute to the integrity of his original vision. He died in 1993.

Review

JazzTimes (Jan.-Feb./93, p.68) - "...a big band classic....Dizzy's big band of the '50s was one of his best and this live set finds the aggregation and its fearless leader at the peak of their creative prowess..."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.53) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "Probably the greatest and most widely admired blues album of all."

Title Note

Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet, vocals); Ernie Henry, Jimmy Powell (alto saxophones); Benny Golson, Billy Mitchell (tenor saxophones); Pee Wee Moore (baritone saxophone); Lee Morgan, Talib Dawud, Emmett Perry, Carl Warwick (trumpets); Melba Liston, Al Grey, Ray Connors (trombones); Wynton Kelly, Mary Lou Williams (piano); Paul West (bass); Charlie Persip (drums).

Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, Rhode Island on July 6, 1957.

Justifiably considered one of the best of Dizzy Gillespie's many live sets, AT NEWPORT captures a dead-on 1957 performance featuring Gillespie and one of his best bands, starring baritone saxophonist Pee Wee Moore, tenor Benny Golson, and pianist Wynton Kelly. Road-tightened by months of world tours sponsored by the US State Department's cultural exchange program, the ensemble is flawless, but not at all mechanical. The goofy humor of comic standards like "School Days" and "Doodlin'" is an old jazz standby that only Gillespie truly continued into the post-bop years. However, on Latin-flavored standards like a scorching version of "Manteca" and a spirited run-through of the old standard "Carioca," not to mention the extended solo showcases "Night in Tunisia" and "Cool Breeze," Gillespie and band show that their chops are as sharp as anyone's. Another highlight is the showcase for pianist Mary Lou Williams, containing selections from her signature piece ZODIAC SUITE and proving this lineup capable of more thoughtful, sensitive playing, than one might expect from their more exuberant moments.
